The Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL), in cooperation with Pinas Forward, organized the webinar on “Kaka-Computer Mo ‘Yan: A Webinar on Raising the Digital Child” held via Zoom last September 3, 2021.
The webinar was conducted after PAMIL saw the need for parents and guardians to acquire competencies to help raise children in today’s digital society. Guest panelists included Dr. Hyacinth Manood, a Medical Specialist at the National Center for Mental Health and Dr. Michele Alignay, a Psychology faculty of Miriam College. Mr. Marvin Olaes of the College of Arts and Letters of the University of the Philippines served as moderator.
Dr. Manood recognizes that even before the pandemic, excessive use of computers for games and social media was already a problem. But now, since we are not allowed to go out of our homes due to health protocols, we have increased our screen time as an alternative to the activity that we used to do before the pandemic. On family relationships, Dr. Alignay reminded the audience that we have to recognize that technology is already here, however, life is supposed to be at the center and not technology even if we are in a digital age.
